How to use & example
- Enter the first duration as hours and minutes.
- Choose addition or subtraction and enter the second duration.
- Calculate the total duration, minutes, and decimal hours.
Example
2 hours 45 minutes plus 1 hour 30 minutes equals 4 hours 15 minutes, or 255 minutes and 4.25 decimal hours.
Decimal hours are fractions of an hour: 15 minutes is 0.25 hours. The tool works with durations rather than clock times, daylight-saving changes or time zones.
Questions
Can I enter more than 59 minutes?
Yes. Minutes are automatically carried over into hours. For example, 1 hour and 90 minutes becomes 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Can a result be negative?
Yes. Subtracting a longer duration from a shorter one gives a negative duration. This calculator works with elapsed time, not a time of day or time zones.
