Words are based on whitespace-separated text, rather than language-specific segmentation. Reading time is an estimate based on 200 words per minute, not a measurement of an individual reader.
Questions
How are words counted?
Words are separated by whitespace. Contractions and hyphenated words without spaces each count as one word. Punctuation on its own is not counted as a word.
How is reading time estimated?
Reading time uses 200 words per minute and rounds up to the next minute. It is a rough estimate: subject matter, reading style, and familiarity affect actual reading time.
